CPC Wins William Foshag Preservation Award

CPC was the proud recipient this week of the Cumberland County Historical Society’s William Foshag Preservation Award, presented at the organization’s annual meeting. We are honored to be recognized for following the example of Mr. Foshag, who carefully restored the historic Heishman’s Mill along the Conodoguinet just west of Carlisle. For CPC, the award honored the organization’s efforts to acquire, preserve, and protect the former watercress farm at South Spring Garden Street in Carlisle and the 1881 Melester Barn and springhouse. Our efforts at the Letort Spring Garden Preserve recognize the important overlap of historic preservation and ecological protection.

At the award presentation, Anna Yelk remarked, “This preserve is indeed a local gem, but it is the people and partnerships that truly make it a special place. CPC’s site steward and land protection director, Ben Mummert, has devoted so much of his time and expertise to caring for the property, developing those partnerships, engaging volunteers, and spending hours of his free time managing it. This award also honors his personal initiative and community spirit.”

After several new grant approvals this year, CPC will begin a barn and springhouse restoration project for the 1881 Melester Barn that, thanks to our partnership with the State Historic Preservation Office, is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Additionally, CPC will be making access improvements, interpretational signs, and continuing ecological restoration.
